Employee Compensation Committee Meeting
Date: 12/2/08
Present:  Janet Cathcart, member, Michael Storch, member, Scott Jenssen, member, Maynard Forbes, Gareth Backhaus and Melissa Noe, secretary

  • The committee asked if M. Noe would contact the surrounding towns and update the 2 surveys regarding benefits and salaries for similar positions.
  • The committee spoke briefly about what they were looking to review and accomplish this year which included:
  • Review the current health benefits.  J. Cathcart is talking with the Town Treasurer about other plans that may be available through Blue Cross Blue Shield or other insurance companies.  She will report back to the committee with her findings.
  • Dental insurance:  J. Cathcart will speak with the Treasurer about options available and their costs.
  • Vacation time for full time employees:  it was noted that Monterey seems to be the only town that doesn’t offer anything over 3 weeks.  The committee will look at adding additional weeks for years of service.  It was noted that it would be helpful to question other towns regarding the longevity/turnover of their employees.
  • Sick time: the committee is going to look at several options which include lumping vacation, sick and personal days into an “earned time off” category to be used however the employee wishes or the possibility of being able to “cash in” unused sick time that will be lost if not used.
  • The committee agreed to review the cost of living raises given and agreed to further review them for their consistency from year to year.  They also reviewed and discussed that merit based raises should be based on performance reviews.
  • The committee is going to look more closely at part time employees to make sure they are in line with surrounding towns.  At first glance it appears that the Health Agent may be low and the Town Clerk wages may be high.
  • The committee will meet again on 12/16/08.
